If running an Ecofriendly Telecentre is more costlier than a Eco-not-friendly Telecentre, what should me more important?
Financial viability or Environment friendliness?

For e.g. VSAT method of connection (Very Small Aperture Terminal) powered by solar-power is more expensive than normal electricity? VSAT is a cost-effective means of connection for a reasonably large Telecentres.

Dear Friends,

I have received a wonderful e-book, translated to Sinhala language, on Climate Change.

Read: Deshgunaya Ape Nipeyumaki < http://www.lankadissent.com/sinhala/News_images/E-book-SinhalaLanguageTranslation.pdf>

A gem of a book I have seen in recent times on this subject targeting common people, comprehensively explaining what is 'Climate Change', what exactly is behind it, how it is happening, evolutionary process, endangered species, future predictions etc.etc.

This would be a very useful reading for school children, though not exclusively, as it is perfect for any age group keen to learn about environment. Telecentre / Nanasala operators can download this free - valuable resource and make available at every Telecentre / Nanasala.

Original English book - titled 'We are the Weather Makers' written by Dr. Tim Flannery. Translated to Sinhala language by Mr. Wijayananda Jayaweera, Director, Unesco, Paris. (Well known Sri Lankan in the ICT for Development sector in the World).

Mr. Jayaweera wanted to pass this to every Telecentre / Nanasala. So I am sure you all will take the lead.

My appreciations, on behalf of telecentre family and Fusion, to Mr Jayaweera for making this wonderful resource available for us.

Best regards.

Thanks Priyanthi akka, Sameera and Senaka for thought provoking statement on eco friendly TC.

We would definitely add these points in the telecentre handbook to be published !

It is also important that we use paper carefully in order to protect the trees. During the by gone era, when people used manual type writers, any typing error was corrected using the 'correction fluid' and retyped on the same sheet. The same in electronic type writers. But when it comes to computer print outs, a fresh print out is taken each time, thus leading to paper waste. It would be a good practice to pay careful attention to print preview, and use econo mode printing.

I ve already invited Kanchana akka to this space, and waiting for her comments eagerly. It's interesting to see how telecentre operators would respond to this...as in the previous year Kanchana akka was able to ignite passion among telecentres through her session in "iCAN" workshop

Thanks for comments Sameera, Yes - LCD is better than CRT in many ways.

We (Fusion) are planning to set up a 'Green Telecentre' - which aims to cut down 'C-Foot print' at the end in the aspects of energy - recycling -attitude change. But we started feeling we are alone yet in this journey.

Would be great to know who is willing to join the journey with us..?

If you feel - you have that 'gREEN - kick' - pl pass a note to this discussion.

Hi

Agree with you guys, we will feel the need so badly when the telecentre numbers goes up in to thousands.

Then we will end up calculating the carbon foot print of a telecentre.

As tiny step, probably ICTA can give LCD monitors instead of CRT for new Nenasalas.

Sameera.
